I'm thinking of making an appointment. What should I do next?

I offer a free 15 minute Zoom meeting to new clients so they can meet me ahead of a full appointment, ask any questions they may have, and ease any anxieties. To book a full appointment you simply scroll to the bottom my website and choose either an online appointment or an in-person appointment.

I have had a bad experience with a therapist in the past. I'm concerned this will happen again.

Unfortunately this is not an uncommon experience. Not all therapists and clients are a good match. Please feel free to let me know if you have been in this situation. Once I am aware of your previous experiences I can help ease your anxiety by explaining how I might help you in your current situation, and the methods I will use. It's really important to me that my clients feel comfortable and accepted in my counselling space!

Will I have to talk about past trauma?

No, not if you are not ready to do so. My approach to Counselling is client directed and trauma informed, meaning you as the client set the pace and the content. I may still ask probing questions (all good Counsellors do) but you do not have to rehash any painful memories and experiences that you are not ready to confront. I aim to provide a safe therapeutic space for my clients, and this includes allowing you the time and space to work through your troubles when you are ready.

Will I be judged for my actions, beliefs or lifestyle?

Not a chance. Everyone has the right to access safe and empathetic support. It can take time to build up the therapeutic alliance (the trusting relationship between a therapist and client), but you should never feel judged, belittled or shamed. My Counselling space is one of acceptance and understanding.

Will there be homework?

Possibly. In order to get the most out of Counselling it may be helpful to complete tasks between sessions. You will never be made to do homework, the choice is entirely yours, but activities may be suggested to you along the way.

What is the difference between a Counsellor and Psychologist?

This is a common, and difficult question to answer. You may be aware that you can obtain a mental health care plan through your GP to see a Psychologist at a discounted rate (Medicare rebate). However, there is often still an out of pocket cost and Counsellors aim to keep their costs comparative to this rate. You do not need a referral to attend counselling, and anything you discuss with me is confidential; no updates or details are handed back to your doctor or other health professional. As a registered Counsellor I am also trained in a variety of modalities and interventions, and am in no way obligated to use only one, as is often the case with Psychologists. I am required to undergo many hours of clinical supervision and ongoing professional development each year in order to provide clients with the best possible therapeutic options. This allows me to approach each client as an individual with their own set of life experiences, and never as a case to be labelled and put in a box. Lastly, Counsellors often have a shorter waiting list, so you are able to book in much sooner.
